Prof Barbara Ryan

Prof Barbara Ryan is an Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore. She is proud to teach as a core member of a flagship educational initiative, the NUS University Scholars Programme, and on secondment to the NUS Department of English Language and Literature. With a Ph.D. in American literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a post-graduate fellowship award from the University of Michigan, Barbara blends her scholarly literary interests with sociological inquiries. Her research ranges from US Transcendentalism to Zora Neale Hurston.

Some of the professor’s favourite books from recent times: Joan Aiken’s The Serial Garden, Roberto Trotta’s The Edge of the Night Sky, Seicho Matsumoto’s A Quiet Place, Philip Hoare’s The Sea Around Us and Naguib Mahfouz’s Midaq Alley.
